A total of five peaceful protesters were killed today across the country. 3 protesters were killed in Lagos, while 2 were killed in Kano.
The extra-judicial killings were unwarranted because the protesters were peaceful and unarmed. The police shot and killed  after brutally torturing him on the street.

In Kano, the police also killed two other peaceful protesters today at the protest rallies there.   Many injuries have also been reported.

ASUU Demands N160 Billion From Government as Allowances

As Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities () were trying to iron out issues yesterday at a meeting convened by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Anyim Pius Anyim, revelations that the union was demanding N106 billion from government as end allowances came out at the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The House of Representatives Chairman, Committee on Education Farouk Lawal and his members were on an oversight function to the NUC but the discussion soon moved from the university system to the current problem on the minds of many – the strike.
Executive Secretary of NUC, Professor Julius Okojie said was demanding N106 billion as end allowances which cover assessments by professors for projects of PHD students and professorship. This amount is nearly 10 times what universities get as capital grant yearly, which is about N11 billion.
Professor Okojie said government was made to believe that the governing councils of universities who had hired the academic staff would foot the bill but rather government was been made to pay.
His words: “The issue of end allowances government said the councils are employers of the university staff, you can’t go and budget for end allowances, it is job that is done that you pay for. Government said let us even see what it amounts to. It took them two years to bring the data. When it finally came, only 11 universities submitted and only four of them were useful and they are asking for N106 billion when capital grant for federal universities in a year is N11 billion. The issue of consolidated salary was to reduce the issue of many allowances and we are going back to the same old process.
The indefinite, total strike declared by Academic Staff Union of Universities, has cripped academic activities at several institutions.
“As a professor, I have gone to many universities to assess final year students’ projects for PHD and people on professorship. I have never collected money; they are now prescribing what should be paid for assessing professorship. The understanding then was that council should be able to address those issues but we now know that councils which are supposed to be employers of the universities do not have that authority the way they are going because they hire and fire. They can even dismiss the vice-chancellor but when it comes to issue of paying end allowances they go to government.”
He argued that contrary to accusations by ASUU that government had reneged on the 2009 agreement, it had met some of their demands to an extent.
“To a large extent, government has met most of the requirements. They said let us just sign, if there are matters arising we would just sit down with the implementation committee and get it resolved. Nobody is saying that now. They keep saying that government has reneged. As soon as the agreement was signed government, paid all the arrears then initiated the issue of the 70 years retirement age. The issue of improved funding has gone on, through the intervention agencies, even government subventions have also improved.
“We implemented salaries up to 52 and half per cent; yearly subvention from government has improved, ETF has been injecting a lot of money in respect of book fund, research fund and zonal laboratories. Two of the first generation universities have received over N3 billion each to upgrade their facilities and infrastructure. This is more than 10 times what they have been receiving in the last 10 years.”
But Lawal who was part of the last agreement signed two months ago by ASUU and the Federal Government said government went to sleep after that and did not do much to avert the current strike. He explained how the National Assembly was trying to meet the legislative demands of the union especially the 70 years retirement age for professors.
“In the sixth assembly, we introduced a bill that was meant to address that issue. It was passed; unfortunately when it got to the president for assent it was discovered that the bill did not reflect what ASUU wanted and so two months ago, when government and ASUU signed an agreement to try to see that most of the issues were implemented before an indefinite strike action was embarked on by ASUU, we took it upon ourselves believing that the legislative requirement would also address some of the demands, we pressed on the executive to submit an executive bill. When we realized it was not forthcoming, the committee sponsored private member bills – one is an amendment to the universities miscellaneous act that would upgrade the retirement age and the other is a bill that would ensure that for academic staff of tertiary institutions it is raised to 65 years. We have taken first and second reading, we would work on it latest by next week and that bill would be passed by the House of Representatives and I believe once that is done the Senate would concur with us,” he said.
He also agreed that the university system was in dire need of improved funding but that even that was been addressed by government.
Farouk said: “On the issue of funding, even though we could not address a significant improvement in the funding, I know we were able to amend ETF Act to now change it to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund so that more funds would go into funding our tertiary institutions and universities. When there was the warning strike two months ago, there was a meeting with the executive, particularly the Minister of Labour, Minister of Education and leadership of ASUU, and we were in attendance as observers and an agreement was signed by two sides hoping that within two months a lot of the remaining issues would be addressed. It is in that respect that government did not do much. The momentum by the executive was lost.”
He, however, cautioned that such funding must be put to proper use.
“I agree with ASUU, we need to fund the universities better. But while we are doing that we also need better transparency and accountability in the management of the funds and we also need greater efficiency. They need an efficient system of implementing the budget. We need to improve on the prioritizing of the funds that go to the universities because sometimes they use the funds for something that is not a key aspect of what a university is supposed to stand for,” he further said.
The committee chairman expressed disapproval that NUC was yet to present before the National Assembly a proposal for the amendment of its act so it can be empowered to criminalize establishment of illegal degree awarding institutions.
He said: “Like I always say, the danger of these institutions is that when they award these certificates, it erodes the integrity of the actual certificates of those who are termed legal institutions. They are a serious menace and sabotage on educational standards. We need to criminalise the existence of these institutions; we need to capitalize punishment because this is creating more havoc than financial crimes.”
Professor Okojie, however explained that a proposal for amendment had been approved by the Federal Executive Council and would soon be sent to the National Assembly.

ASUU Strike - Diary of a Final Year Student

Kano — Final year students are the most affected by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike. At least I can appreciate what I am going through right now. If we were to go by the ideal schedule, I am supposed to be preparing for youth service now but here I am trying to force myself to read for my final examinations.
I do not even know when I would be taking these examinations. I am at the mercy of government and ASUU, whenever they choose to resolve the crisis. As uninspiring as these sounds, I still have to read. God, forbid I spill over.
But do you know what the bigger question is? Even much bigger than when would ASUU call off strike? It is what happens to me after I graduate? God bless Professor Umar Pate, the Head of Department Mass Communication University of Maiduguri who is a visiting lecturer to BUK. His valedictory lecture on bracing up for life after graduation still resonates in my head. The fact that unemployment is a reality in Nigeria was the core of his message.
During this strike, I have been asking myself: "Am I ready to be a graduate?" Remember, being a graduate is not simply spending four or five years in a university and coming out with a grade. Still, it is not assuming that your first class or second class honors would guarantee you automatic employment. The reality is, am I armed and prepared to make a difference in the labour market? So my fellow final year students please use this strike to reflect on how your life would be spent after graduation. After this academic turbulence, I definitely do not want to go through another hassle after graduation.
When I started school, I was made to believe that the minimum of second class honours will get me a good job. Although I aimed higher as the competition for employment got tougher, it became obvious a lower grade holder has no space in the labour market. Right now, a first class holder has to work his socks off to get a manageable employment.
Now the bar has been raised high. It is graduates with masters or PHDs that have an upper hand in the employment market. Prof Pate says he is yet to see a masters degree holder without good employment.

I do not even want to talk about lack of conducive environment for learning, water scarcity and financial difficulties. Considering all these hassles, can you imagine how heartbreaking and frustrating it would be to graduate without a befitting employment? We cannot begin to count the number of graduates involved in armed robbery, prostitution, 'yahoo yahoo' and so on.
All hope is not lost; I want my fellow colleagues to understand that government is not the only provider of employment. The major issue with our graduates is that they always wait to get employed by one organization or the other. We never think of employing ourselves. There is the need to do a soul searching to find that unique talent which can stand you out. A friend of mine would always say, "your brain is your money." There is always something meaningful to make out of your life. I want to leave you with these inspiring words from Bill Gates, one of the richest men in the world. He said: "I am not the best student in college, the best student works with Microsoft, I own Microsoft."

FUEL SUBSIDY CRISIS:STAR ACTOR DESMOND ELLIOT EXPRESSES HIS ANGER.

Click for Full Image Size
DESMOND ELLIOT
Star actor Desmond Elliot has also lent his voice against fuel subsidy removal just like other concerned Nigerians have done since the government took the decision. According to the talented actor, the action is only meant to inflict untold hardship on the innocent masses.
He took to his Twitter page to say;We have lost everything we met on the land. Cocoa, palm oil, groundnuts, cotton, cashew and rubber have been forgotten and are better produced by nations who came to learn from us. We have lost our moral compass, our society is fractured, our statehood is threatened. Our citizens are in all prisons around the world. Some of them prefer foreign prisons to coming back to Nigeria. Our passport is treated with disdain everywhere you present it. Why should our government be this big with special advisers on cassava and beans affairs? Do we need 36 ministers? Why would our president spend close to a billion on food while close to eighty percent live on less than a dollar a day? Why should he budget a billion for generators and diesel when he is urging us to believe in his power sector reform? Why does our President need 6 private jets? Why should our politicians keep their salaries when Obama slashed his? Why should we continue to be wasteful when the handwriting on the wall says “danger”? Why should we believe the government when it says the subsidy gain will be properly reinvested. . Bad leadership and coruption must stop.
In my personal opinion, the voice of the people is the voice of God. I think President Goodluck Jonathan needs to retrace his steps on the subsidy removal before things get out of hand!!!
President Jonathan earns N14 million annually with practically everything at his beck and call, including three new Presidential jets(which set Nigeria back by N21 billion).
In the 2012 budget, almost N1 billion is allocated to food for the President and Vice. That is N900,000 per meal(breakfast, lunch and dinner, and snacks in between),at a total of N2.7 million per day.
In the 2012 budget, the Presidency will be spending all of N90 million on pots and pans, plates and cutlery ! N90 million !!
The Vice President’s official residence is being constructed for about N90 million.
And providing power for Aso Rock Villa,Abuja(the office and abode of the President) will cost Nigeria an arm and a leg.The federal government is fueling generators with N1.3 billion in 2012 budget!
Lampooned and snickered at across the globe as the most expensive democracy known to mankind, recurrent expenditure is 72 per cent of the N4.749 trillion budget of 2012.
Not ready to sacrifice any of these perks, allowances and salary(except a laughable 25 percent of basic salary),the masses are upset, angry and enraged that punishing them with unbearable increment in cost of petrol(from N65 per litre to over N138) is unjusticiable.
Oga Goodluck should start the sacrifice he fervently enjoins Nigerians to endure…by taking a huge salary cut, shunning the extravagance and profligacy that engulf his office, and in addition demand that members of his cabinet,National Assembly and government’s top brass should follow his footsteps.

How To Write and Create Ebook

Computer and Internet Connection To write and create your own ebook, you need a computer provided with internet connection and this is an essential. Computer is a basic equipment to write, create and save all your files and documents that related to your ebook. You need an internet connection to gather all the information from the internet and to do the market research on any topic related to your ebook especially to get some ideas on how to write and create the high demand ebook. In fact, if you don’t have a computer, simply go to the nearest Net Café and use their facilities.
If you decide to buy a computer or laptop, get any computer that has at least 10/100 mbps PCI Ethernet card for high-speed internet connection or look for motherboard has built-in LAN (Local Area Network) it will reduce your buying cost. I believe, most of the computers in the market are equipped with Ethernet card for high speed internet connection.
Get at least 512 kbps internet connection speed from your local internet service provider nearer to you. If you would like your computer be connected directly to your home telephone line, you can use computer provided with modem. But this type of internet connection is too slow but still can be used.
Ebook Topic
To get high demand ebook you should do some market research to cater to the demand, meaning that you need to choose the topic that people like most not the topic that you like most, then your audiences are willing to pay for the information you provide in your ebook. It is good if you can find any topic that you are really knowledgeable with and the most important thing is people are willing to pay for it because they like it much. This is a must to get passive income from your ebooks.
Here are some of the hot topics online that most people are willing to pay you for providing them with this kind of information.
• Car
• Forex
• Blogging
• Dating
• Friendship
• Child Care
• Computer
• Repair a Car
• Web hosting
• House Wiring
• Web designing
• Pets
• Advertising
• Sport
• Finance

• Stock Market
• Home Business
• Internet Marketing
• Photography
• Graphics
• etc
Do Some Research About Your Ebook Topic
Do some market research on any topics that people like most by analyzing any keywords, phrases or common keywords been search on the internet. Analyze any keywords based on searches have been done per day on the internet or based on the searches have been done in the previous month.
Digitalpoint - to analyze any keywords or phrases based on searches have been done per day in the previous month.
7Search.com - to analyze any keywords or common keywords been search in the previous month.
Google Trends - to analyze any keywords or phrases more details and more specific base on geographic locations, countries and cities then you can determine which regions you are going to sell your ebooks.

eBook Title
To choose your ebook title, you need to go deeper on the target market research. Lets say, you did some research on the keyword computer and you found that computer is one of the highest keyword has been search on the internet in the previous month. Obviously, computer is one of very interesting topic for your ebook but do not simply put computer as your ebook title. You need to go more deeper on your research, look for any possible keywords that related to computer such as repair computer, spare parts, motherboard, cpu, RAM, sound card, graphic card, build computer, install computer components, install software and etc. Then, it is much more easier to choose the suitable title for your ebook.
Whatever topic you choose, try to write any topic that people like most not the topic that you like most. The demand must come first then followed by the ebook title and then, the ebook creation respectively. You need a quality ebook not the quantity of the ebooks. Try to use some photos, images or pictures to describe the steps in your ebook because a picture can describe a thousand of words than a full page of letters.
eBook Cover
You need to start your first page with ebook cover. Your ebook needs a cover. People are really exciting to SEE what they are going to buy. The ebook cover will attract more people to buy your ebook. I believe a lot of ebook sellers will start with ebook cover. Your ebook cover or ebook image should be in JPG, GIF or PNG format.
